Listening to the Language of the Bible -
By Lois Tverberg, with Bruce Okkema © 2004 (En-Gedi Resource Center: Holland, MI)
ISBN: 0974948209, 192 pages, paperback.

Listening to the Language of the Bible is a guide for discovering the richness of the Scriptures in their Hebraic setting. From seemingly odd phrases, it shares important insights from Hebrew and Jewish culture that clarify reading and deepen Bible study. It also looks at the powerful sayings of Jesus in light of the Jewish culture of his time. The book contains more than 60 brief, illustrated devotional articles that unpack the meaning of a biblical word or phrase for our lives. It is intended both for personal reflection or group discussion - the Companion Bible Study is available below.

"Outstanding in its ability to communicate biblical concepts like nuggets of gold...I highly recommend this book for those wanting not only deeper intellectual understanding, but wanting to grow into more joyful and deeper discipleship."

"The perfect introduction to Hebraic thought and culture...broadened my understanding in a way that will forever change the way I read and study the Word... It is such a blessing when you find a book that is so interactive and personally applicable.”

Listening to the Language of the Bible, Companion Bible Study
By Lois Tverberg © 2005 (En-Gedi Resource Center: Holland, MI)
ISBN: 0974948217, 96 pages, paperback.

This Bible study is intended to be a helpful expansion of Listening to the Language of the Bible (above), with questions that explore each concept more fully in other Bible texts and discuss other nuances of meaning than in the corresponding LLB chapter. It allows readers to think through how reading from a Hebraic perspective adds new meaning to Scripture passages, and what implications this might have for our lives today.

The book will work well for an individual or group Bible study. Group study is especially recommended, because readers will be blessed by others' thoughts and personal application. Partial answers are included for group leaders, and links to relevant articles are available on this site too.

New Light on the Difficult Words of Jesus: Insights from His Jewish Context
By David Bivin © 2005 (En-Gedi Resource Center: Holland, MI)
ISBN: 0974948225, 208 pages, paperback.

What if we could step back into the first-century world of Jesus, walking on a dusty road with him as one of his first Jewish disciples? What if we heard his teachings in the context of the rabbinic conversations that surrounded him? Here we examine Jesus’ lifestyle as a first-century Jewish rabbi and look at how his words would have been understood within the larger framework of first-century Judaism. His words will grow in clarity and depth when seen in the light of their original setting.

We are delighted to offer this new book by David Bivin, edited and published by the En-Gedi Resource Center. Bivin is the founder and editor of Jerusalem Perspective (JP), a magazine that explores the Jewish context of the Gospels. He has traveled and lectured internationally for more than 25 years. This book contains dozens of his best articles on the Jewishness of Jesus, edited for the general reader.

Review by Dr. Marvin Wilson, author of Our Father Abraham:

In Jerusalem, David Bivin has interacted for decades with some of the best Jewish scholarship in the world. This book displays many of the brilliant Hebraic gems the author has mined that help illuminate the pages of the Gospels. Clearly written and very readable, Bivin shows why Christians need rabbinic sources if they intend to know and understand Jesus in his first-century Jewish setting. New Light on the Difficult Words of Jesus is a valuable resource for every serious student of Scripture.
