What Does it Mean to be a Follower of Jesus?
Dr. Ed Dobson, Pastor, Calvary Church (Retired)
Grand Rapids, Michigan

Dobson is the retired senior pastor of Calvary Church in Grand Rapids. He has authored numerous books, served as an advisory editor for Christianity Today, and speaks with wisdom from a long and fruitful career in minstry. Dobson has an avid interest in language, culture and Hebraic thought, and shared that in his talk on Mark 1:17-20, where Jesus says, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." He discussed the nuances of the word "follow" and looked at the background of Jesus' words about "fishers of men" in the Scriptures. He made several profound links between a Hebraic understanding of Jesus and our responsibilities today. (Recorded March 23, 2006.)

Jesus and the Law:
   David Bivin, Jerusalem Perspective

A. Jesus' Technical Terms About the Law: Several of his sayings contain technical terms and idioms used by other rabbis of his time, like "abolish," "fulfill," "bind," and "loose." Understanding these can yield surprising insights about how Jesus' words would have sounded to his first-century listeners.
B. How Kosher was Jesus? How observant was Jesus of the rulings of other rabbis of his day? Did he reject their teachings? A closer reading shows that he lived within the laws and traditions of his time. Knowing more about the Jewish practices that Jesus observed can help us understand him much better.

The Land and Culture in Biblical Translation:
Use and Abuse of Contextualization
Halvor Ronning, Home for Bible Translators

Knowing the geographical and cultural context of the biblical text is critical for accurate translation and interpretation. However, until relatively recently, little attention has been given to having translators study in Israel or understand the Bible’s Jewish context.

As founder of the Home for Bible Translators, Ronning tells how the bringing of native translators from more than 23 countries to Israel to learn the language and land of the Bible has impacted Bible translation. He shares some examples of how the text can be distorted without an understanding of the setting from which it came, and discusses what can be done to more faithfully render the Bible's truth in its original context.

Israel's Songs for our Soul

Dr. Timothy Brown,
Professor of Homiletics at Western Theological Seminary, Holland, MI
What was the spiritual life of the people of ancient Israel like? What were their struggles, and how can their prayers relate to the experiences of our lives? Here Dr. Brown looks at Psalm 135 as an excellent illustration of the way the ancient Hebrew worshipper expressed his faith, and how it can still speak to us today. (Recorded June 2, 2005)

“Over and over and over again, Israel remembered her past. Not because she was nostalgic, but because she wanted to be faithful in the future. And the recollection of the past – whose we are, and what we’ve come from reminds us again of who we are and what we ought to be. Memory becomes a re-orienting dynamic or a feel of Hebrew spirituality. Something happens when people remember the goodness of God … Memory was a part of Hebrew spirituality and it ought to be a part of our spirituality.” — Dr. Timothy Brown

The Journey Home:
A Pilgrimage of Faith Through Orthodox Judaism

Ruth Berghorst
grew up in a conservative Christian family and
church. Having struggled with faith, she shocked her parents by deciding to marry a Jewish man, and then going through the rigorous process of study, interviews and mikvah to become an orthodox Jew. Ruth immersed herself in her new-found faith and worked for both an Orthodox Rabbi and later an Hasidic Rabbi, becoming intimately involved in the life of the synagogue. After several years she returned to the faith in which she grew up. Ruth has a fascinating perspective on Christianity through Jewish eyes, and Judaism through a Christians’ eyes. (Recorded May 19, 2005.)
